(AP) ? Protesters gathering in Chicago for the NATO summit were gearing up for their largest demonstration Sunday, when thousands are expected to march from a downtown park to the lakeside convention center where President Barack Obama and dozens of other world leaders will meet.

Several hundred demonstrators wound through the city’s streets for hours Saturday, testing police who used bicycles to barricade off streets and horseback officers to coax them in different directions. Increasingly tense clashes between protesters and police resulted in 18 arrests, Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said.

Most of Saturday’s demonstrations remained relatively small and peaceful, including one march to the home of Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Obama’s former chief of staff. But a later march stretched for hours as protesters zigzagged back and forth through downtown, some decrying terrorism-related charges leveled against three young men earlier in the day.

Organizers pledged a larger crowd when protesters from the Occupy movement will join forces with an anti-war coalition to mark the opening day of the summit later Sunday.

“We want the world to focus on NATO ? they’re not important and have no mandate anymore,” said Micah Philbrook, an Occupy Chicago spokesman, who criticized the large police presence Saturday. “They’re pushing us around and not letting anyone get out of the protest even if they want. They’re very aggressive.”

McCarthy said police would be ready with quick but targeted arrests of any demonstrators who turn violent Sunday.

“If anything else happens, the plan is to go in and get the people who create the violent acts, take them out of the crowd and arrest them,” warned McCarthy, at the scene of protests after dark. “We’re not going to charge the crowd wholesale ? that’s the bottom line.”

He said officers had been hit by batteries and bottles thrown by protesters during the day.

“You can’t control what other people are going to do, but I can tell you our cops are doing a great job, and they’re prepared,” he said.

Security has been tight throughout the city, as the heads of state from about 60 countries began arriving to discuss the war in Afghanistan, European missile defense and other issues. As police gathered en masse on street corners, near parks and key landmarks, the city’s streets remained largely vacant and many downtown buildings closed.

“It’s strange because downtown is empty,” said Gabe Labovitz, a 44-year-old economist out for a walk near his home. “The police presence is reassuring but unnerving.”

Three activists who traveled to Chicago for the summit were accused Saturday of manufacturing Molotov cocktails in a plot to attack Obama’s campaign headquarters, Emanuel’s home and other targets. But defense lawyers argued that the police had trumped up the charges to frighten peaceful protesters away. They told a judge it was undercover officers who brought the firebombs to an apartment in Chicago’s South Side where the men were arrested.

Making Women Partners in Breast Cancer Research | KQED QUEST

breast cancer cells

Dr. Susan Love thinks breast cancer researchers need to get over their addiction to rodents.

America?s most famous breast cancer surgeon started treating women some 30 years ago. ?And we?re still doing the same thing we did when I started,? she told a crowd in San Francisco last month at the Sage Bionetworks conference, aimed at transforming biomedical research.

?Surgery radiation, chemotherapy, hormones, and now we?ve added a little bit of targeted therapies,? said Love, a clinical professor of surgery at UCLA. ?We never subtract anything, mind you, we only add things on top. And our results are about the same.?

Although breast cancer incidence and mortality have decreased since 1998, by 1.3% and 2% respectively, more than 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year and more than 40,000 will die from it. Nearly 110 women die from breast cancer every day.

Experts think earlier detection and better treatments account for the decline in deaths, but screening carries risks. With mass screening comes overdiagnosis?that is, diagnosing a condition that would not prove symptomatic or fatal?and with overdiagnosis comes overtreatment and other potential harms (see video below). Screening technology can?t distinguish between aggressive and harmless tumors, which can shrink or even disappear on their own. Overdiagnosis will likely just increase as imaging technology finds smaller and smaller tumors.

Medical experts acknowledged in an editorial in the Annals of Internal Medicine last month that it?s time to recognize overdiagnosis as a serious problem. Most patient-education materials don?t even mention overdiagnosis and most women aren?t aware of the possibility, the authors said. As they pointed out, and any woman knows, ?the impact of a cancer diagnosis lasts a lifetime.?

It?s hard to think of a physician who?s done more to acknowledge the trauma of breast cancer than the author of the best-selling ?Dr. Susan Love?s Breast Book,? now in its fifth edition.

That book, along with Love’s early refusal to accept the oxymoronic (emphasis on moronic) ?early detection is your best prevention? mantra of mainstream cancer and advocacy organizations, won her a place of honor among frustrated breast cancer activists, who know all too well that if you can diagnose cancer, you haven’t prevented it. Detecting it, by definition, means it’s there.

breast cancer surgery tools

The surgical tools used on breast cancer patients in the 18th century look gruesome, but aren’t really so far removed from the “slash, burn and poison” approach to breast cancer today. (Illustration: Louis-Jacques Goussier)

Activists have long pushed researchers to shift their focus from treatments and cures to true prevention.

Despite $4 billion spent on breast cancer research, researchers still don?t know what causes it or how to prevent it. Yet Love believes that the tools exist to ?eradicate breast cancer within our lifetime? if we ask the right questions.

And for decades, Love has helped shine the spotlight on causes, not cures, to spare women from that dreaded diagnosis. But that goal will remain elusive, she believes, as long as researchers keep studying the disease in rodents. That?s because mice and rats don?t get breast cancer. Researchers have to give it to them.

So she?s been trying to wean researchers off rodents. ?I can say this is a good study, you could do that in women, and they say, ?Let me tell you about my rats.? ?

Yet researchers can learn valuable insights into the origins of disease by comparing people with an illness to matched cohorts of healthy people, as the legendary Nurses? Health Study has demonstrated for heart disease, diabetes and other conditions.

Finding the causes and, ultimately, how to prevent breast cancer requires a radical shift in thinking, Love said. And that means that at least some researchers have to give up their rats and mice and start working with the people who get the disease.

Researchers used to tell Love that even if they did want to study women, they didn?t know how to find them. But she knew that was the easy part. So for more than three years, the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation has been recruiting an online “army of women” with a target of enrolling ?one million women and a few good men.?

susan love at sage bionetworks

Dr. Susan Love spoke at the Sage Bionetworks conference in San Francisco last month. The Seattle-based nonprofit is dedicated to ?moving beyond the current medical information system and its rewards.?

?Scientists come to us with studies that need people, and we e-blast them out to everybody in the army,? Love said.

So far, they?ve recruited 365,000 women for about 60 studies. Seven in 10 of the women don?t have breast cancer, but are “altruistic,? Love said. They?re willing to undergo unpleasant procedures to help researchers figure out root causes. In one study, women in the control group had to endure a sigmoidoscopy and a biopsy. And Love got more enrollees than researchers could use.

By the end of this summer, the foundation will be launching its own Health of Women Study. The large online breast cancer cohort study will follow women with and without a diagnosis to identify new risk factors. It will also follow breast cancer survivors to identify factors that predict long-term survival and consequences of different therapies.

Any woman over 18 can register online or with a mobile phone. (Men are welcome, too.)

Love?s study will let participants suggest questions they?d like to see tested, because she thinks you don?t need a PhD to come up with a good idea.

She told her San Francisco audience that early theories about the cause of human papillomavirus (HPV) came from observations of people who knew a man whose wife died of cervical cancer, and who then married a second woman who died of the same cancer. ?They said, well maybe it?s the guy.?

?And then we figured out it was sexually transmitted, then we figured out it was a virus and now we have a vaccine.?

Potentially, Love reminds us, ?Everybody is a patient.? She thinks eliminating disease is something we should all do together.

Deciding On A Home Improvement Project | Luxury Apartments …

One way to lower your electric bill is to install a motion sensor on your outdoor lights. This way, the bright spotlights only come on when someone is outside and needs the light and then, turn off when not needed, saving on energy. Also, motion-detector outdoor lights can act as a deterrent against theft.

Focus on exterior lighting for your next home improvement project. Installing an outdoor motion detector is a good choice; the sensor will ensure that the light only comes on when you need it to. Not only does this save you money on energy bills, but the motion detector is also a good security feature. It alerts you if anyone is walking around your property.

Paint your walls a new color. This can be a quick way to make a huge difference in your home?s appearance. Different colors can change the mood of the room and give the room a different personality. Many times a coat of paint can eliminate the need to change much else.

If your kitchen is in need of a renovation that you can?t afford, consider simply repainting your cabinets and replacing their hinges. You won?t have made any major functional changes, but your kitchen will appear much nicer and newer. Replacing hinges ensures that cabinet doors fit snugly instead of hanging open, and the new paint will brighten up the whole room.

Keep your partially used can of drywall compound from drying out between uses! All you have to do scrape and wipe the insides of the can down to the surface of the remaining drywall mud. Next, pour just enough water onto the mud to cover its surface. Before you use it again just pour off the water and it will be as good as new!

You don?t have to throw out your old wicker patio furniture. Sure, it may be weathered, but you can make them good as new. Replace your old cushions, or sew a new cover for them. Buy some cheap spray paint in shocking black or elegant white and spray your wicker set in the chosen color. Make sure to wear a protective mask over your mouth for safety. This can make your patio set look good as new and give you a reason to spend the day outdoors.

Minor home improvements have a small but cumulative effect on property value. Setting and achieving modest goals for repair and improvement projects is a good way to keep home value moving upwards. These ?little fixes? are cheaper and faster than major renovations and can even make a fun leisure activity for the handy homeowner. Teak Patio Furniture, Water Wall

Greece calls new elections after talks collapse

ATHENS (Reuters) – Greece abandoned a nine-day hunt for a government on Tuesday and called a new election that may hand victory to leftists who might cut the nation’s financial lifeline, pushing it closer to bankruptcy and out of the euro zone.

After six rounds of fruitless wrangling, party leaders emerged from a final session at the presidential mansion to gloomily declare that deep divisions over a 130-billion-euro foreign bailout package had killed any hope of a coalition deal.

“We shouldn’t have reached this point,” said Socialist leader Evangelos Venizelos, who personally negotiated the rescue package from the European Union and IMF which the hard left says has imposed too harsh an austerity regime. “For God’s sake, let’s move towards something better and not something worse.”

Reviled for imposing deep wage and spending cuts but vital to keep the country running, the bailout worth $166 billion prompted Greeks to elect the most fragmented parliament in decades on May 6, giving no party or bloc a clear mandate.

A second election is expected to produce a similarly divided legislature, but the balance of power is seen tipping towards opponents of the EU/IMF rescue and raising the likelihood of a coalition that reneges on the deal keeping Greece afloat.

That would almost certainly mean the end to aid from foreign lenders, leaving Greece without cash as early as next month and paving the way for its eventual exit from the euro zone.

Greeks who showed their fury against spending cuts by humiliating the long-dominant Socialist and conservative parties earlier this month must now choose between the pain of austerity and an even more painful return to the drachma currency.

“Much depends on whether the Greek people in this repeat election are going to vote with anger and passion or if they will cool off, reflect and see in effect what the real choices are,” said Theodore Couloumbis, analyst at the ELIAMEP think-tank. “The choice is between bad and worse.”

Financial markets, worried that a Greek euro exit could spread turmoil to bigger euro zone economies such as Spain and Italy, tumbled on the news. The euro fell to a four-month low against the dollar, while Italian and Spanish bond yields rose. Greek stocks fell 5 percent to a 20-year low before paring losses. They closed down 3.6 percent.

YES TO EURO, NO TO DEVASTATION

A compromise to produce a government that might save the country from further financial calamity proved elusive; the three biggest parties in the newly elected parliament each failed to form a coalition last week and three additional rounds of talks mediated by the president ended without result.

Dejection was visible on the faces of the five party leaders who sat down to talks on Tuesday. The far-right Golden Dawn was not invited, while the anti-euro Communists did not show up. A tense meeting ensued, sources from two parties said.

After barely two hours, the politicians threw in the towel. A spokesman for President Karolos Papoulias summoned reporters to announce a new election and plans to form a caretaker government on Wednesday. The vote is expected in mid-June.

Almost immediately, Greek party leaders were in front of cameras and supporters in spirited pre-election campaign mode.

Conservative leader Antonis Samaras, whose push for early elections backfired and left him without enough support to renew his pro-bailout coalition with the Socialists, appeared distraught as he made his appeal to voters to back him.

“The message you sent is clear: ‘Yes’ to the euro, ‘No’ to those policies which devastate the Greek people,” said Samaras.

Polls show the leftist SYRIZA party, which rejects the bailout and came second behind Samaras’s New Democracy, is now on course to win a new election, a result that would give it an automatic bonus of 50 seats in the 300-seat parliament.

The party’s charismatic 37-year-old leader, Alexis Tsipras, has soared in popularity by promising Greeks a future in the euro zone without the yoke of austerity – horrifying European leaders who say the country cannot have its cake and eat it too.

“If we have any hope today it is because all together we took a big step on May 6. Now it’s time to conclude it,” said Tsipras, a handsome, ex-Communist student leader who burst into the political mainstream after this month’s shock vote.

“The time has come to form a government of the Left, with wide support, and put an end to the these policies that destroy this country.”

“NO ALTERNATIVE”

The prospect of new elections has left European lenders which have bailed Greece out twice close to despair. Senior European Commission officials held urgent talks on Tuesday to work through the fallout from a second Greek election.

“We are really at a critical juncture,” one official taking part in the discussions said. “The decisions are really in Athens’ hands. But it doesn’t look good.”

As French President Francois Hollande flew to Berlin to meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel for crisis talks on the very day he was sworn in, Merkel’s foreign minister, Guido Westerwelle, called the failure in Athens a “bitter blow” to trust in Greece.

“What Greece needs now is dependability and the will to reform to help it get over the mountain, in close collaboration with its European partners,” he said. “The reforms to achieve this are hard and painful but they are the only way back to growth and competitiveness. There is no alternative.”

Even if European lenders were to cut Greece some slack on its austerity commitments, there is no government in place to negotiate a next tranche of aid – and no guarantee there will be one before Greek cash coffers run empty.

Greece’s predicament is hardly new. The country has lurched from one crisis to the next over the past two years and is now enduring its fifth year of recession. Nearly one Greek worker in five has no job. Protests, riots and highly public suicides have become commonplace in a sharply volatile social climate.

Initially exultant at having humbled their political class in this month’s vote, Greeks are now increasingly worried the country is on a path of no return.

“The country is finished,” said Panos Leonidas, 57, a travel agent. “From now on, you can only live here if you’re an animal.”

Lightning hits French president’s plane, none hurt

PARIS (AP) – Socialist Francois Hollande took over as France’s president Tuesday and jetted off to Berlin hours later for talks on Europe’s debt crisis – only to have his plane struck by lightning. No one was hurt.

The Falcon 7X aircraft was hit by lightning shortly after take-off Tuesday, and returned to the Villacoublay air base outside Paris as a precaution for inspection, Defense Ministry spokesman Gerard Gachet said.

Defense officials say the president and his entourage were transferred to another aircraft, a Falcon 900, and took off shortly thereafter. Hollande is due to meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel to discuss Europe’s financial crisis.

It was a stormy presidential beginning for a man who promised to be a more “normal” president and less flashy than predecessor Nicolas Sarkozy.

Hollande walked up the steps of the Elysee Palace in Paris and walked out Tuesday as France’s first Socialist president since 1995, taking the helm of a country worried about Europe’s future and pledging to make it a fairer place.

The 57-year-old rode to the presidency on a wave of resurgent leftist sentiment amid Europe’s debt woes and protests against capitalism around the world.

After a ceremony steeped in tradition, Hollande displayed his populist touch with a rain-soaked ride up the Champs-Elysees avenue, standing tall in his vehicle’s sunroof to wave to crowds lining the streets before getting out for handshakes with adoring crowds.

Hollande then left within hours on his first diplomatic foray to Berlin, following a postwar custom for new French leaders to reach out to their German counterparts to solidify European unity. He also named a moderate, Germany-friendly member of his Socialist party, Jean-Marc Ayrault, as his prime minster.

Hollande and Merkel are in different camps, however, when it comes to solving Europe’s debt crisis. While new figures Tuesday showed the 17-nation eurozone has avoided a new recession, thanks largely to Germany, new political turmoil in Greece was reviving fears about the fate of their shared euro currency.

HTC One X camera challenge – can you see the difference between a smartphone and a camera?

HTC camera challenge

HTC is pretty confident in the new camera they introduced in the One series. I have to be honest, they have good reason to be. The camera in the One S is downright spectacular, and really can replace a typical point-and-shoot digicam. It's a wonderful mix of hardware, software, and magic that truly delivers. In fact, HTC is pretty sure you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between pictures taken with the One X and those taken with a stand-alone camera. Hit the link below, run through and see what all the fuss is about.

Why does Norway’s Breivik invoke the Knights Templar? (+video)

Anders Behring Breivik, who killed 77 people in a twin terror attack in Norway last July, claims to be a member of a reborn ‘Knights Templar.’ What’s the symbolism?

One of the highlights of today’s testimony in the trial of Anders Behring Breivik, who is accused of the murder of 77 people during a bombing and shooting rampage in Norway, was the prosecutor’s efforts to challenge Mr. Breivik’s purported membership in the “Knights Templar.”

Skip to next paragraph A sociologist for the defense talks about Andrew Breivik’s world view.

Breivik claims to have helped “refound” the ancient military order as a force to fight immigration and multiculturalism in Europe. But why turn to a long-gone Christian order to symbolize his agenda today?

The Knights Templar, or “Templars,” were a Christian order founded in the 10th century. Named for the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, the Templars initially protected pilgrims traveling through the Holy Lands, but eventually evolved into a powerful military force that waged war against the Muslims during the Crusades.

The Templars became so powerful, however, that European leaders grew to distrust the order. Early in the 1300s, King Philip IV of France launched a crackdown on the Templars that, with the help of Pope Clement V, eventually spread Europe-wide, destroying the order. Many members were tortured and tried for heresy by the Catholic Church.

But despite, or perhaps because of, their ancient history and sudden demise, the Templars still hold a solid grip on modern imaginations and pop culture. They are frequently depicted as the mysterious controllers of the world in books like Umberto Eco’s “Foucault’s Pendulum” and movies like “National Treasure.” “The Da Vinci Code” and “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” set the Templars up as secret keepers of the Holy Grail. They even appear as the enemies in video games like “Assassin’s Creed.”

Certainly, the organization that Breivik claims to be a member of is equally mysterious. Breivik describes the organization as “a leaderless network, made to be self-driven cells.? He said that ?For militants, [Knights Templar] is meant to be a version of Al Qaeda.” He has yet to name another member of the group, claiming that to do so would risk their being caught, though he has indicated that his “English mentor” can be found in London and that a Serb “war hero” living in Liberia is among the group’s ranks.

Whether or not the Templars in which Breivik claims membership are real, the name is likely meant to evoke both the mysterious nature of the original Templars and their open war against Muslim forces during the Crusades. The historical Templars’ modern reputation and supposed influence makes a strong symbolic counterpoint to terrorist groups like Al Qaeda.

Monitor guest blogger James Bosworth suggested that the use of the name may also be meant to legitimize the group as a moral one.

Last July, Mr. Bosworth noted that Breivik was not the first violent criminal to invoke the Templars: A Mexican criminal gang has also adopted the name and some of the associated symbolism. But Bosworth concludes that “The Mexican Knights Templar code of conduct appears to be a false appeal to Mexico’s citizens,” something that could also be argued of Breivik’s use of the Templar mythology. “The Knights Templar label is a failed attempt to grant historical legitimacy to a violent act that truly has no justification,” Bosworth wrote.
